about

the 4track demos - spine
recorded in 1996-1997

Edwin and I left our previous band The Hatch in 1995, taking with us a bunch of songs and some ideas for a new band. Luc was the singer in YTMIDM, a band Edwin played in, and a band I sometimes worked for as a roadie/sub/friend/etc, and he joined us. Bas did sound for YTMIDM and played bass. Edwin somehow knew Bart, who turned out to be a great drummer and (despite that) a really nice guy. So by the end of 1995 we had a band.

Edwin and I had been writing songs together for a couple of years. And by the time we started writing for Spine we had formed a partnership that still exists today. Unfortunately quality control as far as lyrics is concerned wasn't of the highest level. After Spine we stopped writing in English. (Although my English has improved considerably since then.)

I had been dabbling with my 4track for some years, and when in February 1997 it was time to record a demo -with no budget- the 4track was brought to good use. Bas got us some mics and a plan was made. This being a demo, we decided to go for a monaural approach. Sub-mixing (bouncing) would lead to audible loss of sound quality (hiss). So we came up with a strange track layout. Vocals, guitar and keyboards each got a track of their own, leaving a single track for drums and bass. Bart was stuck in the referee room, away from the band. Bas went DI I think. If necessary we replaced tracks. And for a couple of songs we recorded vocals during a separate session.

Eventually we had enough material for the demo. We went over to Bas' single room apartment in the Spermaflat in Oss, where a first mixing attempt was made. I can't remember what outboard gear was used. We couldn't get the sound right, so we decided to re-do the mix a while later. Using guitar pedals, a Midiverb and no experience, we mixed to minidisk, with Edwin's Bose hifi system as monitors. The mix was better, but not much. A couple of years later I clumsily mastered the demo, adding a bit of spirit and a lot of high.

A remix was in order, so I dumped the original four tracks to harddisk, mixed and edited the songs, et voila.

Tracks 1-11 were on the original demo. Original artwork is around somewhere, but I have yet to find it. Anyway, not much came of the demo. Although one track -In Isolation- made it onto the infamous AFFZ-CD.

One track from those sessions was left off the demo: Maybe. The other songs on this album were recorded in the roughly year after the demo sessions. These are rough recordings, not intended for publication, but hey, it's a long time ago and we were young.

By the middle of '97 (?) Bas had left the band, and Joop entered, while Edwin and I were getting busy with material for YTMIDM. Although we continued rehearsing and playing, the band was not going anywhere. Late 1998 I was asked to join YTMIDM fulltime, which meant curtains for Spine.

In hindsight we didn't try hard enough to mould the band into a distinct shape. And by the time that shape started to loom in the distance, my/our focus was moving towards YTMIDM (which eventually became In 't Wild.) Those 3 or so years were good fun, working with great guys and some great memories.

I hope you will enjoy this collection of songs. A bit of nostalgia for the old folks.

-Antal

Technical notes:
The demos were recorded using a Yamaha MT3x 4track portastudio. The tracks were transferred to harddisk through an Alesis IO26 audio interface. Cubase Studio 5 was used for extensive editing, audio manipulation and mixing, which is why for instance the drums have a stereo feel to them. The mixdowns were mastered using Audition 3.
Note that not all of the tapes were in great condition and/or the recordings were troublefree. There is some fluttering, dropouts and wobbly sound. (Hey, at the time Gore had just invented the interweb.)
